Advent is a time of joy. On the third Sunday of Advent, we celebrate “Gaudete Sunday” which means rejoice.

We all want joy and happiness, however, we sometimes settle for contentment that does not last. When we look for joy in worldly things, we are left empty. If we look for happiness alone in experiences, excitement, adventure, or achievement the joy comes quickly but it will soon disappear.

The Gospel of John says, “I tell you most solemnly, you will be weeping and wailing while the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. (John 16:20)

God wants us all to be happy and joyful too! He sends us his only son, Jesus, as a gift and our lasting joy. Jesus sets us free from sin. During Advent we are encouraged to visit the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Here we are reconciled to God and set free from our sin which robs us of joy. We return to the Father who embraces us and fills us with his love and joy. A joy that is deep and strong!

God restores our joy as we prepare for Jesus’ coming during Advent. We are all sinners. We were all caught in sin and darkness. We were lost but we are now found. We rejoice at the coming of the baby Jesus, who comes to bring peace and lasting joy!
